This February I went again up to Churchill in another attempt to photograph the Polar Bear Moms with their cubs. I had booked 6 days out on the Tundra and was quite confident to have lots of opportunities to photograph the bears.

This confidence got a first crack as we met at the train to go out to the lodge and another photographer told us that he spent 10 days out last year and didn't get a decent photograph.

Nevertheless the weather was great, a bit cold maybe at around -40º Fahrenheit, but sunny. Everyday we went out, I thought today is the day, and then it wasn’t...

I photographed from sunrise to sunset, and after (see: Snow, Ice and Northern Lights), but I had yet to see a bear. Needless to say that on the evening of day five my confidence was dwindling fast. Not that I hadn’t a good time, mostly due to the wonderful people I met at the lodge, but I still hadn’t seen a bear!

Then day six arrived, my last chance, and finally we heard the radio crackle with the message we all were waiting for, the scouts had located a bear. And not only a bear, but a mom with triplets, a rare treat.
